Google PageRank - What And Why!

Page Rank for link builderz is What a Pet means to a lonely person. Did I exaggerate? I guess not .

So lets talk about Google PageRank today. Starting with the PageRank definitions, according to Wikipedia

PageRank is a link analysis algorithm used by the Google Internet search engine that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyper linked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of “measuring” its relative importance within the set.

Translating it into layman terms, Google PageRank is actually a tool/algorithm of Google to measure the importance of a web page. That green color bar is determine a webpage’s importance by ranking it in 0 - 10 scale. One can see the PageRank of his website with the help of Google toolbar, addons if using Firefox or many web based services that show the current PageRank of any webpage.

google page rank

One thing to remember before going further is Google PageRank is always assigned to Web Page not to Web Site. So if some xyz.com has a PR 6, it means that the home page or index page of the web site has PR6 not the site itself. The formula to calculate PageRank is published on many places and its quiet complicated, atleast to me it is. So What is the purpose of Google PageRank and what advantage one has If he got some High PR? And why everyone (even the ones claiming that they don’t give a damn bout PageRank but introducing their own SOMETHING RANK ) get cheered up after getting some increase in there green bar?

Well the advantage of PageRank is the increment of site’s importance to Google. When comes to deciding which page is better and getting all the other ranking factors like content, backlinks, age etc of same value, Google can rely on this factor. Moreover If you are some sort of advertising company(a web advertising company) or a wanna-be-monetizing-website than the importance of PageRank is doubled for you. Other than that there is not much. What You shouldn’t expect from high PageRank is high SERP’s ranking or more visitors.

Google Update its toolbar page rank after 2 to 3 months. According to Google the Page Rank one can see via tool bar or any other tool is 3-6 months old and the original Page Rank is changing constantly, hence maintaining the curiosity level of people maintained. Moreover, Page Rank of a website passes to all the links present on that Page. Means if web page A has a PR 5 and it has 5 links on it then a portion of PageRank will be  distribute equally to those 5 links. That’s why you have terms now like PageRank Juice, PagrRank Channeling etc etc.

So when ever doing link building try to get links from a high PR assigned web page. This helps you to increase the trust level of your website in Google’s eyes. And you know what, a trusted site always ranks better.

Did I just say something un-important? By the way you can access the patent for Page Rank by Google here. Google PageRank Patent

And yes, the next PR update is expected in the end of February or in the start of March.
